Just out of curiousity, for those who always read, what is the book or books that you are currently reading?
Right now, I'm finishing up a translations of Homer's Odyssey, translated from Ancient Greek by W.H.D. Rouse. It is one of the last of a long list of books I had started reading, but never finished. After that, I think I'll finish Wind, Sand, and Stars, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, telling about his experiences as a pioneer aviator, and then this biography on Stonewall Jackson for a report. :)

well, i just gave up halfway through, er...R.A. Salvatore's 'The Demon Awakens.' i got bored. it wasn't very good. the hero was SO trying to be Strider the Ranger. and the story was, frankly, going nowhere. the long way round.
so now i've got this one called 'Fire and Hemlock' by Diana Wynne Jones. although i've only read about three pages so far...
honestly, i'm contemplating just hanging the whole thing and reading the Hobbit again. i've already been through about five Terry Pratchett's in the last week or so...The Truth, Carpe Jugulum, Feet of Clay, er... some others i'm sure. sadly, the search for good fantasy books turns up pathetically few, so i am left to re-read old favourites time and time again...

Still good reading though...especially when one needs to use a sleep aid.:D
And BTW Sam...you were correct. LeGuin's latest earthsea novel "The Other Wind" was very long winded (pun intended). I was only in high school when I read the original Earthsea trilogy (though I remember it being much better than this new one. Talk about a letdown ending...sheesh! Anticlimactic with a capital "A". I humbly admit my mistake. Although, there was another member a few months ago who loved Ursula LeGuin as an author. I warned her about the scathing post you left me last year...heh heh...:b

Yes I finished the Fionavar Tapestry, and it was really good. In my mind it was not nearly as good as LotR, but what can I expect? I will probably read more of them. A funny thing is, one day I was reading FT, and the author was on TV! Wierd. My sister had read his books too, and liked them.
There are many parallels between FT and LotR. Anyone who's read them will know. :)
BTW I think it's spelled Tollkine. ;)

If I remember correctly Samuel, it was a very rude and hurtful comment...:( Seriously, it was forgotten long ago.:b
Tigana is a bit more "macho" than the Fionavar Tapestry, with sorcerers tyrants and wizards involved. Also there are some risque sex scenes that are moderately graphic, so those of you who are a bit squeamish about that sort of thing probably better stay away, or have your older sibling read those sections.:evil
There is a newer member around here "fire of a phoenix feather" who loves Kay very much.:)

His Dark Materials trilogy is the only trilogy I've read that even comes close to the works of tolkien, these books are a must read ppl, if you liked lotr you will not be disappointed with Philip Pullmans works. Still a bit confused about the first book because its called Northern lights here and The Golden Compass in the US, the Golden Compass would fit better as then all the titles would be materials like the books are collectively known(His Dark Materials-Golden Compass, Subtle Knife, Amber Spyglass) so go on ppl get your reading glasses out. ;)

Well, I'm a huge Guy Kay fan. I've read Fionavar, Tigana, The Sarantine Mosaic, and I just finished The Lions of Al-Rassan about a month ago. Supposedly he's working on a new book. Don't know if it's a series or a single. Oh, and right now I'm reading A Sand County Almanac. It's for grad school, and it sucks.

it's translated, and actually abridged. ^^ being the world's first novel, it was really, really long, and since court life in the heian era isn't all that exciting, the translator pulled some of the chapters out.

The Left Behind series is a series of novels written about one guys theory of what will happen when the Antichrist appears on earth and the Rapture occurs. (Fictionalized account of what he thinks will happen when the Book of Revelation starts to come true.)

I have read the Oddyssy. I like Greek culture and stories. I love playing Age of Mythology for the same reason. :)
I must read the Illiad soon. :Dc

I haven't played Age of Mythology yet. The last one I played was AOEII. I haven't even played the expansion for it! I really need to catch back up on those!

If you liked AoE:II you should really like Age of Mythology, unless your computer is behind the times. I'm getting the Titans expansion in the mail soon. :)

Yeah, I like Age of Mythology too.
This reminds me that we need a new games dicussion thread.

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë, is one of the great Gothic romances, but a little too much Sturm und Drang for my taste. Give me Pride & Prejudice!
I've just started "Narn I Hîn Húrin" in Unfinished Tales; wish I had read this book years ago! And I'm re-reading LoTR.

Is this your first time for Unfinished Tales, kazbels? I think the Narn i Hin Hurin is the best part, though Tolkien never finished the part about Turin's sojourn in Nargothrond. :)

Hi Theo! < waving >
Yes, that was my first time to read Unfinished Tales; wished I had read it years ago. I jumped around, rather than reading straight thru, so I started with "The Ishtari". I think my favorite part was Tuor's journey to find Gondolin, though at times it seemed like the Hebrew children's wandering through the wilderness.
I thought the fleshing out of Túrin's story made him a bit more sympathetic. It's a shame all this wasn't incorporated into The Silmarillion.
I'm currently reading Return of the Shadow, and am leisurely making my way thru LoTR.

I agree. Another good part in UT is The Battles of the Fords of Isen. That's how I started thinking Theodred was cool whereas in LotR I didn't even remember him. :)
Woah, something seems to be wrong with the underline tag...

Yeah, it's great. It's placed about 40 years after the fact and it basically deals with how those left alive are looking at death. You should definately check it out.

I just got the Silmarillion and am reading it.
Finally, it took me long enough to get it.

I'm reading A Game of Thrones right now, the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series. Very good read!

I'm proof-reading/editing a novel my friend wrote. Once I've edited it I'll make some illustrations (maps, cover, etc...), and then we'll submit it to a publisher (if we're lucky).

Ooh, is it fantasy? Would you e-mail it to me? I might want to take a look at it. :)c

Just finished Raymond Fest's Magician: Apprentice. I bought it several weeks ago and it's been hanging around, looking forlon as I read Tolkien. So I decided to put the poor thing out of its misery. It's been a long time since I read it.
