I suppose nobody here has heard of Skype before. In the case that this is true, I'd like to inform you all about it. It's sort of like MSN and a telephone combined. Not really like the audio conversations on MSN, either. Just... different. It works like a phone. Anywhere in the world, you just log in to your Skype account, and you can talk using a microphone and your computer speakers, or if you like you can use a headset. Or you can purchase a number, and people can actually call your computer using a real phone. It's all quite nifty, I think. It's also totally free (unlike your home phone or a cell phone - especially for long-distance). Just download Skype, install it, and make a username. :)

I have a Skype account, myself. If anyone else joins, you can add me to your contacts. I'm known as barahirthetowerlord.

Heh, I think I have a mic lying around. Hrm.... I'll see what I can do, since paranoid people don't let me have MSN. :devil

Speaking of msn, is it down for anyone else, or is my computer just being messed-up?

This is my first time hearing ANYTHING about it. Sounds interesting though. :D Thinking about installing it.

Wow, that's so cool! The best thing is the free part! There is something called Net2Phone, which is very popular, but it costs money. :)

Have you signed up for it yet, Bere? Barahir and I have already had some phone conversations...

Skype is being bought by Ebay for $2.6 BILLION!

Barahir
September 12th, 2005, 11:36 PM
That's quite costly...

Wow, why cantī anyoen buy any of my stuff for a similar amount?

I tried google talk the other week. It worked very well. Seems you canīt have multi-people conversations though.

Skype seems to work alright for me, though. :)

Google talk only works on Windows...

Well, it's been a few months since you've all had it installed. Do you still like it? I guess you can even call peoples regular phones through your computer for a small per minute fee. I've read that it is as if you're talking to someone in the same room, the quality is that good. Is that true or just a sales pitch?

Just wondering what you all thought about it. I thought about getting it so I could talk to my sister in Rio de Janiero. I'd have to get her friend with the computer to install it as well...

Thanks. I'm the kind of person who always has to find the best product so I imagine the mic I buy will probably be a good one. Baseloaf, people don't understand what you say? :P

Great minds think alike... Quality Lasts A Lifetime is my motto, along with You Get What You Pay For

I wholeheartedly agree with that. I'd just as soon go without as opposed to shoddy merchandise. I'm checking out Sennheisers...

The price is actually a good indicator of quality... unfortunately. :(

I think it's all right, but there's still a few second time delay. That's why Barahir and I can't play songs simultaneously. :(

Barahir
November 26th, 2005, 09:36 PM
Well, it's not a few seconds. It's about half a second to a second, I'd say... I can't remember. It's unfortunate, but it doesn't hinder any normal conversation. Just if you're trying to play a song with someone at the same time.

I can't wait for the FCC to say that it's illegal, a la music file sharing... :ohwell

It's open source isn't it?

Daughter of Mirkwood
November 28th, 2005, 10:08 AM
It's like telephone, it's not classed as FILE sending because it's on stream.
