I adore the Clan of the Cave Bear books by Jean Auel, about the Cro-Magnon heroine Ayla and her adventures. This woman did a lot of research of Ice Age Europe and our ancient ancestors and I'm waiting for the next book to come out. I have all of them so far and highly recommend them.

Considering it took her so long to write Shelters of Stone, I won't be looking for it soon. But then again, Auel may be mostly there already. SoS did give me the impression of having an abrupt ending, so perhaps she has some more narrative to jump start her.

Incidentally, I have seen a professional flintknapper at work and found it fascinating. And yes, he worked with only hammerstones and horn punches and the like, no modern or metal tools whatsoever. Wish I could remember his name.

I started reading the series when it first came out, but then got tired of the main characters and haven't read any of the more recent books.

Flintknapping is very interesting. I once took a commmunity education class offerd by an archeology professor. He brought various samples of stones/rocks to class and had us hammer on them. He made a rather impressive point for a spear, but the efforts of the rest of us were pathetic. :)

Yah, knapping takes a lot more practice than it looks like, or than what you'd think. :)

I'd love to learn it.
