View Full Version : Glandros' Movie Thread II

I have returned, and I've brought the movies with me.
For those of you who never knew me from Shores, I started a Movie News thread there as well. Basically, it's a thread fro posting interesting things you've found out about upcoming movies, as well as discussing recent movies.
There's pretty much free reign to it here. I don't ask that we stick to one movie at a time. I just ask that we stay on topic and keep it to movies. Obviously, board rules apply. Have fun!
One last thing... Everyone's opinion counts. If someone says something about a movie you don't agree with, think before you act. You can take on the subject, take on the movie, and say why you don't agree with their opinion, but I don't want anyone saying someone else is wrong in what they think.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With that, I'd like to start the thread. The first movie I'd like to mention is simply because I saw a preview for it tonight.
The screen shows earth, "What a Wonderful World" is playing, and it's all peaceful. Until the planet blows up. And as the fragments of earth fly towards the camera, so do two words. "Don't Panic".
That's right. "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Douglas Adams was working on the script before he passed away. The movie is scheduled to come out May 6, 2005, just 2 weeks before Star Wars.
I've personally never heard of the director or the actor for Arthur Dent, but the movie is making Ford Prefect black, casting Mos Def (most popularly known for his role in Italian Job). Also cast are Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Beeblebrox and Warwick Davis as Marvin the Paranoid Android.
I'm extremely excited to find out more about this film, since the original was a BBC production that was, if nothing else, a little corny...
A new HHGTTG movie? :eek :B :eek :B
Good news indeed! :)c Yes, the BBC production was a little corny :rolleyes , and provoked quite a bit of media/viewer discussion, here in the UK, at the time. However, if I remember correctly, the producer (or director) (or somebody) responded to the criticism by pointing out that the corniness was deliberately introduced by the production/direction team. :brows
Still, it will be good to see a production that, hopefully, is nearer to Adams' vision. (But, I'm not holding my breath) :ohwell .
Yay! It´s finally being released. I haven´t heard any news about it in ages. Btw, do you know anything about the HDM films, if they´re going ot be made and if so, how far are they in the process?:)
As for "The Golden Compass," it's scheduled for a 2006 release. They haven't even begun the pre-production process yet, it's still just an announced project.
The script is being written by Tom Stoppard, who also wrote "Shakespeare in Love." There's nothing about the actors, but it's scheduled to be directed by Chris Weitz, who usually teams up with his brother Paul Weitz to direct movies such as "American Pie" and "About a Boy."
However, I have no idea how old this information is. But that's all I have so far.
American Pie? :eek
Well, lets hope the Golden Compass doesn't get skrewed around with. :(
Sounds like an interesting movie.
How about something coming a bit sooner...The Phantom of the Opera, with Andrew Lloyd Weber at the helm is to be released in Dec of this year. The preview I saw online looks good
That sounds cool too! :D
I saw the preview for that at the theater. Looks amazing!
I'm dying to see the movie because Phantom is my favorite musical. Plus, with Andrew Lloyd Weber actually having a hand in it, it should be true to the musical.
He's even written a brand new song just for the movie.
I just watched the trailer - cool! :)
And in case no one has noticed, there is a teaser for Star Was Episode III at www.StarWars.com. :)
You can also see the trailer for Episode III if you see "The Incredibles" in theaters.
I saw the preview for HHGTTG, when I saw American Treasure in theaters, yesterday.
How was that? I've been interested in seeing National Treasure since the premise seemed intriguing enough, but I haven't heard much for reviews yet.
I was impressed with it. Not the best movie out there, but entertaining enough. "The Rock" is still better...
But that's what I saw the Hitchhiker trailer with as well.
Well, there's been no new exciting news added in a while, so I did some hunting to find something else people may be interested in.
There were rumors that they would be making a third Mortal Kombat movie. Well, the rumors appear to be true.
Mortal Kombat: Devastation is in its pre-production state, and both Chris Casamassa and Robin Shou have confirmed that filming will start soon. (Chris Casamassa did the voice of Scorpion, and Robin Shou was Liu Kang in both movies.)
The interesting thing is that Robin Shou is involved obviously, but I haven't seen his name on the cast list yet. In fact, there are currently only 3 scheduled actors. Chris Casamassa will return as Scorpion, and the movie will involve Lord Rayden and Johnny Cage, played by Christopher Lambert and Linden Ashby respectively. (For those who don't know it, these are the original actors for the two roles, rather than the actors in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
I'm very interested to see where this goes, but I'm not expecting too much... It could still be canned...
December 10th, 2004, 11:29 PM
I haven't seen the original movie, but I know someone who knows Chris Cassamasa. And to my knowledge, he was more than just the voice of Scorpion...didn't he do the stunts too?
All I can add is speculation...with school I have number one not seen a movie in theatres since the semester started and number two not had time to watch an at home..well, a few over Christmas break. There are some movies that I am looking forward to seeing though. The number one being the Phantom of the Opera! *starts singing* I absolutely love the musical! The costumes look fantastic! The music is simply...wow.
My problem with the Phantom of the Opera is that I think they casted an actor who is too handsome for the role.
Glandros
December 12th, 2004, 04:41 PM
I don't see that as being a problem for it... They never said the Phantom had to be this completely hideous man. I think it will work quite well if he's good looking when he has the mask on. I mean, if he was really ugly, he'd hide his whole face, not just the scarred part, right?
Damaring
December 12th, 2004, 08:58 PM
But, according to the book, his entire face is hideous, with yellowed skin and no nose. Like a death's head.
But there is always Raoul for eye candy.
Though actually, I don't like Raoul and I think Christine is nuts for going with him. I mean, the Phantom was insane with love for her. (Though, I suppose he was insane before he met her, so not all of the insanity can be due to love of Christine.)
Lothíriel
December 16th, 2004, 01:49 PM
This movie is actually based more on the Broadway show than the book. The Broadway show is obviously different than the book...it has become widely accepted that only a portion of the Phantom's face is disfiqured...thus, the iconic mask.
I can't wait until it comes out!
bah on whoever reviewed it for Time or Newsweek (I can't remember who it was). He said that the film was too gaudy and the actor playing the Phantom wasn't handsome enough! ;)
Oh, and did you know that the girl that plays Christine sang at the Met when she was 6?
Hubby and I went to see Finding Neverland tonight. In a word, it is magical. Truly magnificient; Johnny Depp is so amazing as James Barrie and Kate Winslett is wonderful. And the four boys who played her sons were terrific.
Go see it! And if you cried at the end of RotK, take a hankie for this.
He had a strange feeling as the slow gurgling stream slipped by: his old life lay behind in the mists, dark adventure in front.
I'm glad you got to go see Finding Neverland. I absolutely loved that movie. It lived up to everything I had hoped for, which was a lot seeing as how I'd been waiting for it for over a year...
And Lothiriel is right about Phantom. This movie is based on Andrew Lloyd Weber's show, which was in turn based on the book. Therefore, it follows the way he wrote it, which was that the Phantom wasn't entirely disfigured, only a part of his face.
It should be interesting to see the things they're adding that weren't in the musical. I guess there's an epilogue to the film that kind of includes a bit of what Weber may have been thinking when he said he was going to do a sequel musical...
Sounds very interesting.
Well, it's decided...I'll go see Finding Neverland tonight.
I saw National Treasure on Thursday and loved it. This movie could have been totally clicheish but it wasn't. I knew of course what was going to happen but that didn't diminish my enjoyment.
Lothiriel, didn't go to "Finding Neverland". Unfortuantely it isn't in any theaters in our town. We saw Lemminy Snicket(ok i confess I didnt pay atteniton to how it was spelled) It is a really good movie. I dopn't think everyone will care for it, as it is eccentric, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Jim Carrey did a wonderful job.
Lothíriel
December 19th, 2004, 08:49 AM
Yeah, I was extremely disappointed...not in Lemminy Snicket but in not being able to see Finding Neverland. Although PDA beat me to the punch I'll still tell you what I thought of the movie.
The set design was awesome...also, a lot of work went into making the end credits of all things...really good!...Merryl Streep did a wonderful job as Aunt Josephine and this movie...although inherently morbid did make me want to read the books to see how the books portray things.
I'll have to add those two movies to my ever-growing must-see list. It seems as if that girl from The Day After Tomorrow is playing Christine. Good choice, in my opinion. :)c
Lothíriel
December 23rd, 2004, 09:35 PM
Yes she is...and she sang her own music unlike Minnie Driver who had a voice double. ;)
I finally saw the Incredibles last night. Very good movie...excellent plot line, especially for an animated film. I definitely recommend it to anyone that hasn't seen it.
December 26th, 2004, 08:15 AM
Me! Me! Me! Me!
I want it on DVD right now! Ahh, it's so awesome! Absolutely fantastic! The costumes are great. The acting is superb. The transition from stange to screen is magnificent! Oh, and the music, as always, is beyond description!!!!
*Prima Donna first lady of the stage think of your muse and all the cues from theatre...can you bow out when they're shouting your name...think of how they all adore you....*
For anyone who loves the stage production you will definitely more than enjoy the movie...oh, I absolutely have to see it again!!!!!!!!
Well, Lothiriel has left me nothing to say about a wonderful movie! Phantom exceeded my expectations. I can't figure out which movie the critics who panned this movie saw, but it wasn't the one I saw. Go see it!!
I watched the Bourne Supremacy on DVD yesterday...thanks PDA for saying that the Bourne Identity should have been called the Bored Identity snoring Matt Damon...I would have seen the Bourne Supremacy a lot sooner. ;)
Man...Karl Urban played a bad guy in this one. :( Hey, but he still looked good. :D
I liked the movie but wished that Marie didn't have to die...I'm a hopeless romantic at heart.
I hadn't hoped to get to see Finding Neverland and I certainly hadn't expected to see it last night but when I was looking at movie times last night I discovered that it was showing at a perfect time for us to go.
I went to see Cinderalla Man last night and was not disappointed in the least. I recommend it to everyone.
I personally am not a big boxing fan. You should have seen my mom and I during the bouts...our hands were over our eyes...partially of course ;). Actually...I hate boxing...but I absolutely LOVE this movie.
The character development and the story development outside the sport are absolutely fantastic. Russel Crowe and Renee Zel (shoot I cant remember how to spell her name).
No wonder people were scared in 1938...War of the Worlds is absolutely, completely scary! And good too...it ranks third out of the four movies that Ive seen this summer (not that thats bad...all of the movies Ive seen so far this summer have been good)
War of the Worlds is best when if focuses on the character development of the relationship between Ray and his kids...I could do without...well, Ill let you watch the movie
I saw it and thought it was really well-done though the best overall way to describe it is Signs/Independence Day. A lot of people were mad at the ending. I saw the original movie, so I didn't understand their indignation.
